[Arcnet] newbie -- trying to get arcnet to compile with linux 2.6.17

A unix guru here at GSFC has helped me get arcnet.ko etc installed.  
Still, I have a problem:

  S3: No ARCnet cards found.

The machine actually has two such cards installed.  The guru's current 
supposition: there are missing
ifcfg-arc0 (and ifcfg-arc1) files from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ 
.  A websrch for ifcfg-arc0 yielded
a few (Polish?) letters which mention ifcfg-arc0 but give no examples.

Could someone please provide an example?
