fire spinning

Fire spinning is an amazing sport and act performed by the Baltimore Calefaction Society.

Dale Ghent explains:

Fire spinning (or, "Fire poi") involves spinning arm-length lengths of chain with kerosene-soaked kevlar wicks at the end around your body.

Spinning Poi is a ancient sport that comes from Polynesia, specifically from the Maori peoples of New Zealand. Way Back When, their culture dictated that the women were not allowed to speak whilst in the presnce of males. So the women devised a silent way of communication by swinging around lengs of string with wieghted balls on the ends. Different moves meant different things.

Eventually, this spread and was integrated into native dance routines and rituals. Some crazy folks said "Hey! Lets soak those in hydrocarbons and light them up!"
