I am still chuckling to myself late in the evening about my dad's reference to 2 Kings 2:23-25 this morning in church service. This is where Elisha the prophet is surrounded by a gang who mock and threaten him, so he curses them and two bears come out of the woods and tear up all 42 of the kids.

Sometimes, he admitted somewhat bashfully, when he thought of that verse the first thing to come into mind was that that he wished had those bears. "But what if I had the power to call up angry bears every time I was upset?" he asked rhetorically. "I think my life would be represented by a series of bear-mauled corpses." I can't disagree with the desire or the likely ill effects. I probably would have been bear food 14 years ago.

After the service there was a picnic outside to celebrate the 50th (literally 52nd, but nobody made the connection two years ago) anniversary of the congregation. I found out there that in a church service last week in the same place involved a story about when some dude I had met when I was middle school through some Star Trek fandom connection. Apparently he showed up at my parent's doorstep in full Star Trek regalia and introduced himself to my father as Captain James T. Kirk, and someone this got worked into a service.

I think he may not be remembering that particular story correctly, but I can't remember a bit of it to correct him. I'll have to go back in my journals from those odd years of my life and see if I can corroborate that particular tale. Then again, some things are best left to the memory hole.
