WMBC The student-run radio station of UMBC in Baltimore, MD. WMBC was founded in 1979 as the WUMD Radio Club and broadcast over carrier current circuits to the dorms and one or two eating areas on campus for a few years. In 1998, the studio and transmitting equipment were revamped, changing over from carrier current to a Part 15 low-power AM broadcast transmitter in the center of campus. Three Internet streaming audio servers were also installed to increase the range of the station to the tech-savvy UMBC students and alumni.
Some people involved in the radio station over the years I was involved include: Victor H. Aulestia, Steve Burkowske,
Jeff Covey, Bill Dotson, Ray Dubicki, Shari Elliker, Tim Farrell,
Dr. Charles Fey, Eric Gasior, John Houston, Freeman Hrabowski, Cornell James, Jeremy Lansman, Jon Lasser,
Steve Levy, Gabe Marcus, Mike Oehlers, Todd Pettit, George Preisinger, Jim Pugh, Joseph J. Regier, Gary Rupert, Geoff Silver, Ray Soellner, George Vitek, Dr. Jamie Washington, Charles Woolston, and Dan Zubairi.
Some folks who proceeded me include Geren Mortensen, who was on-air talent and chief engineer from 1981 to 1982. He says, "Back in '81-'82. Back then we had a suite in the basement of what was the Math/Science building (right on the Quad, across from the old Student Union). The first semester, we were playing jazz, but switched to free-form rock over the summer and never looked back. What a time that was!"
Update May 5, 2003: Jeff Cather is now Station Manager-elect. My sympathies.
