January 16, 2005 Went to my first "regular" service at Kittamaqundi Community this morning. In spite of a late start, we made it from Parkville to Columbia in the light traffic in about 35 minutes and had a chance to settle down before the start of the service.
The main room was arranged with nine square tables with one or two chairs on each side, and a centerpiece candle, hymnals and some papers on each one. There were breakfast cakes and coffee downstairs, so we helped ourselves to some well-needed caffeine.
The service began with a call to worship from Psalm 40:1-11 followed by a hymn. The youth were then called up for a short service of their own where one of the women from the worship group explained callings and what asked what they felt their callings were in the year 2005. One felt called to purchase a fish from the pet store, which everyone thought was very funny.
After that there was a reading from 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, and prayers sandwiched between soloist and pianist performances. Then we heard a reading of John 1:29-42 and found that there were questions and some thoughts on the scripture in the papers on our tables.
Each table was then asked to take the time to discuss amongst their table their thoughts on the questions and be prepared to answer for the group based on what we knew, believed, and had heard in the reading and the thoughts on the life and works of John the Baptist we had heard.
Everyone seemed to enjoy the exercise and some very interesting thoughts on the scripture came out from each group, with some tables deciding to completely ignore the question and focus on the things that had seemed most notable to them in the course of the morning.
After the sending forth, Suzy, her family and I went to La Madeleine French Bakery where sitting in the next table over was none other than Sara Sathya back from her trip to Brazil, looking very tanned and blond. She was busy relating her trip to her friends so we didn't pester her with questions, but promised to meet up later and get all the tales of her travels later.
From there we were off to the Playa del Fuego planning meeting from hell. We got there a little before 14:00 to set up all the audio gear, although the major portion didn't arrive with Ben until a little after half past. By the time 15:00 rolled around I had finished fucking around with everything and got all the audiovisual gear completely configured for conference call and streaming audio participation.
And then the fun began.
The first parts weren't so bad, mainly just administrative thoughts on the size of the lot and what we would be able to do with the site based on what the VNVMC is willing to extend to us in terms of property not impeded by fences, grass seed, rows or corn or swampy soil. The general consensus was that save for the "back forty," we had no idea.
Then it was time to talk about tickets. And talk we did. Finally we got all the resolutions out in time to forward a ticket schedule out to everyone and begin selling on the web side at exactly 9:00 pm ET on February 15, 2005 at $40 each. You heard it here first! Unless you read the burningass list, in which case this is old news.
The meeting was finally over at 18:30 or so, after dragging on through tickets for over an hour and a half, but everyone seemed relatively happy with the results. Minutes and more details should be posted in the usual places, including here as they are made available.
Then we got home and passed out, waking up the next morning with the TV still tuned to UPN and the volume up. It's been a long week.
