January 3, 2005 Spent the entire day at work converting our internal mailing lists from Majordomo to Mailman so that anyone in the department can approve posts instead of me playing authorized poster whack-a-mole. It'll be fine for months at a time without any moderation and then suddenly one person with no moderation restrictions will post something to the office about donating to the Red Cross for the tsunami victims, then someone else replies that their church is doing something, and it goes downhill from there with people asking me why Joe can post about his church, but their post about the softball game was blocked for work-related reasons.
People will always be inherently egotistical and forgetful so there's no technical fix, but at least this makes the maintenance a little easier. My awesome Perl scripts that we used to maintain the Majordomo setup only needed about ten lines changed to call some of the Mailman list synchronization binaries and it was all good. If anyone wants a script for maintaining massive lists of people in multiple Mailman lists through a comma delimited file, let me know.
Suzy took the bus home today from work, which worked out sorta well except she only made it to the Taco Bell on Taylor Avenue instead of Harford Road. She's got a fix on the strategy and the whole awesome cell phone seems to really be helping. We came home and both fell asleep while listening to Digitally Imported trance, so I'd call it a good night.
