Neighbors:

We are having a crime wave down along 26th and 26th Streets. The building next to ours was broken into many times over the weekend and we had the police here over the weekend several times. We caught some of them carrying out an armoire and stopped them for a short period but between the time that the police left and came again, they had walked off with the piece of furniture. One of our neighbor's car was broken into and moved up to 28th Street from his parked location on 27th Street. This morning a neighbor was robbed from her apartment, the police came and didn't search the apartment and when she returned to the apartment she found the robber waiting for her. She escaped and has contacted the owner of the building who is in the process of changing all the keys to the building. This coupled with the shooting on 27th and Greenmount Avenue a week ago and the homicide on 29th and Greenmount two days ago creates a crime wave as far as I am concerned. This does not even consider the ten cars each day that are being broken into each day in the area.

Please be careful!!!

There's an interesting read at The Diagonals of "Peabody Heights", basically a history of northern Charles Village with maps and illustrations.

From Amy LaPerle:

In Charles Village there's One World Cafe on University, Sams Bagels on St Paul street, Donna's Cafe, and the campus for outside hanging out. Also, the Baltimore Museum of Art right around 30th and Charles Street at Museum Drive - check out the sculpture garden. Sat morning early (7am I think) the farmers market starts in Waverly. From Charles street, take 33rd street East for 6 blocks or so and the market is on the right. I recommend getting spring rolls, mango sticky rice and thai iced coffee from the thai vendors. While in the neighborhood, go two blocks south from the market to 31st street and check out Normals used books/records - it's a great place to spend some time.Yama Studios at Maryland Ave (runs south of Charles Street one block west) and 27th street has beginning yoga at 11am on Sat - get there a little early to get a place, it's $10 and you don't need to bring a mat.

January 15, 2003 - The Charles Village Rec League is searching for volunteers to help coach the 10-15 girls basketball team. If interested, please call Jim Casey at 410-253-0049.

January 3, 2003 - There is now a wireless ISP for Charles Village, provided by Paul Moscatt of the Little Shop of Hardware.

Now that students have returned to the area it is important to remind them of the peak hour parking restrictions in Charles Village. This morning most of the cars that were towed had out of state license plates. Also, please inform your new neighbors to avoid becoming a victim of theft by not leaving anything of value in their cars.

My personal police blotter:

August 14, 2002: Huge police activity in front of 2600 North Calvert Street with 3 juveniles arrested and the mother shouting at the responding police officers. Four cars and one paddy wagon, and a police helicopter shining into the parking lot next to the house. Reports I received indicate that several juveniles had either robbed or attempted to rob a person near the 2600 block of Saint Paul Street. The crime was interrupted by the arrival of police units and three of the suspects were spotted and arrested.

July 31, 2002: 23:00 two black juveniles who ran from behind the 2600 garage, police arrived, no damage found.

July 27, 2002: Attempted break-in at 2606 North Calvert Street around 21:45. Police called, arrived about 10 minutes later. Case number 02G20375.

July 4, 2002: Armed robbery unit block E. 32nd St., 17:25

July 3, 2002: Armed robbery 3000 block of Hargrove Street, 21:50

Break-ins through open windows were happening frequently during the month of June 2002.

June 26, 2002: Armed robbery Charles and 29th Streets, 23:40

June 21, 2002: Armed robbery 200 block E. 32nd Street, 22:50pm

June 17, 2002: Armed robbery Charles and 30th Streets, 1:45

June 12, 2002: An elderly man was attacked on Howard St. near 28th and another robbed in the 2300 block of Hunter Alley, both in daylight.

March 11, 2002: A resident of the 300 Blk. East University Parkway came home about 3:15pm and encountered a burglar in her apartment.
