We regret to inform the campus community that a UMBC student died this afternoon of a gunshot wound. The incident at Hillside apartments is being investigated by Baltimore County police and the identity of the student is being withheld pending family notification. Residential Life and Counseling staff are actively assisting students and staff. More information will be shared with the campus community as it is available.

We are now able to inform the campus community that the shooting incident at Hillside Apartments Wednesday afternoon has been ruled a self-inflicted gunshot wound. We mourn the death of our student Mark C. Schmitt and have his friends and family in our thoughts. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

Residential Life and Counseling Center staff have met with groups of students through the evening, and continue to be available for students, faculty or staff who need their support.
