On July 7, 2004, the ACLU filed a lawsuit (Deane and Polyak v. Conaway) seeking marriage for same-sex couples in Maryland! The lawsuit was filed against county clerks charging that the state law denying same-sex couples the right to marry violates the Maryland constitution.
