May 11, 2002 There was magic in the air this afternoon.
First of all, we went out to the park, and had a dome building party there.
Lots of people thought it was totally cool when they walked down the
path. A couple of kids came up to take a look. The dome fit completely
in the stone circle in the middle of the park clearing. It was amazing.
A guy came up to me and said, "You know, there's a geodesic house just a
few minutes from here." He didn't really know any of the details, but I
told everybody we should do a road trip to find this guy, or at least
gawk at his house.
A few minutes later, another gentleman on his bicycle rode up and asked
a few questions about the dome and why we were building it. We talked
for a while, then he said "That's really neat what you're building here.
I'm particularly interested in geodesics because I happen to own a
geodesic home."
I was floored. Turns out this guy is John Millen, who owns ThunderHeart Drums, a company that "provides one-of-a-kind Middle Eastern, African and other ethnic drums for musicians, ethnomusicologists, dancers and music therapists throughout the country."
In addition to all that, he built and owns a geodesic house.
we didn't have enough high and sturdy ladders to finish
construction completely, but as you can see from the pictures the
process was quick and painless. With the experience from today (and a
few electric drills), it should be a cinch to set things up at Playa del Fuego in two weeks.
Thanks to John for stopping to talk to me and for Baltimore webloggers
Dean and Amy McKenzie (future converts?) for coming out with their son Caleb and helping with the deconstruction. Check out their sites if you get a chance.
The magic is already here! See you all soon!
