Picture of the Day for April 23, 2002

Purple Pansy is the Picture of the Day for April 23, 2002. This picture was taken on the way back from Tamber's Nifty Fifty Dining on Saint Paul Street in the Charles Village section of Baltimore.

I haven't sent out a picture recently, but as I told Kathleen about a month ago, it's called the Picture of the Day, not the Picture of every day. Carpe diem. I chose this picture because it really steamed Suzanne that I mastered the manual focus on my CoolPix before she got a chance to really figure out how to work it on her Olympus C-3000. I also like this picture because I took it on the weekend she decided to drive 900 miles to pay me a surprise weekend visit, and she was just a few feet away photgraphing some flowers for her own site as I clicked the shutter. Can you blame me?

Since the last e-mail I lost my camera card, got mocked relentlessly by Suzanne for not being a "real photographer" since I was using my spending money on plane tickets to see her instead of camera accessories. Why I finally bought into her argument is still a mystery to me, but I finally broke down and bought another one. A week or two later, found the one I lost. Hamfest came around and I got three sets of rechargable batteries which seem to last forever.

So now I have 256 megs worth of photo space which will let me do about 360 pictures per event (even without bringing my laptop) and an almost limitless set of battery power. If you thought my galleries were big before, just wait! The only thing that hasn't changed is my Nikon CoolPix 990. More than 7520 shots later, it's still kicking ass and taking pictures.

The last two weeks have been really busy, with the Passion party and fundraiser for Playa del Fuego (great job, Kathleen!), the IMF protests in D.C., our Playa del Fuego planning meetings and a trip up to northern Wisconsin to Deeply Rooted to help move stuff. All of those have new galleries online for them, which I've included in the links section below.

Took what little time I had this weekend to do some code updates to my gallery site. The index pages are tidied up a little bit and should load faster. There are now 12 images per page in the gallery instead of 10, arranged in a block of 4 by 3 instead of 5 by 2. I think it makes a big difference in ease-of-use. Also you'll notice that albums are now divided into numbered pages. The grouping on the pages aren't completely static, but if you have a ballpark idea where a picture is in an album, this will make it easier to find it later. I appreciate any and all feedback on this.

Yesterday was a red-letter day for vees.net. I average about 6994 hits per day this month, but yesterday had an astounding 38055 hits, with over 557 megabytes of images downloaded from the latest galleries I've added. Welcome to all the new visitors and thanks to all the folks who link up my site on their webpages and in their discussion groups.

If you know anyone that would enjoy the Picture of the Day mailing, please send them this URL.
