May 3, 2004 Happy birthday to Bill Carlson!
President George W. Bush told Ariel Sharon during a state visit two weeks ago that the US administration was totally behind his plan for Gaza. This was an unexpected move by Bush. If the plan moved forward in that direction, the Bush Administration would be able to say that their bold move cemented the process of peace in the Middle East. If it failed to garner support, there was a risk of alienating the Arab world. Unfortunately Sharon returned to Israel only to have his own Likud Party reject the proposal. Bush's surprising gamble appears to have failed, much to the detriment of future political relations with a lot of nations.
More information can be found in Likud Vote Against Plan a (Further) Blow to Bush's Credibility (on Daily KOS) and Likud Rejects Sharon's Gaza Withdrawal Plan in the Washington Post.
