Charles F. Pickering, Sr. On February 21, 2002, at the urging of the Planned Parenthood organization, I sent a letter to Senator Barbara Mikulski asking her to oppose the nomination of Mississippi federal district court judge Charles F. Pickering, Sr. to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Judge Pickering has been hostile to reproductive and other civil rights for some time, and does not represent a good choice for the judiciary during wartime. Individual rights including privacy and reproductive freedom must be protected to assure our national strength. Judge Pickering will only undermine these principles if his future rulings follow his track record of the past.
The Senate Judiciary Committee vote regarding Judge Pickering's nomination is scheduled for February 28, 2002. Please write your Senator as soon as possible and urge them to oppose it. For more information, see Planned Parenthood's Save Roe site.
February 7, 2004 - Almost a year later, he's back on the nomination docket.
