January 8, 2004 Hi to my regular front-page readers. Sorry I haven't been around lately, but I've been catching up on my sleep and my social life. Both in very large chunks. I had a big dinner and went to bed around 7:30 and slept well into 8 this morning. I feel great now.
I always thought I was awful at learning spoken and written foreign languages. I'm glad to see I'm not alone.
New Year goal #2: Figure out some way to post to this site by actually editing stuff in
Pico or vi from the shell. Web interfaces are nice for everyone else, but I can't be
creative in a little box that resets when you hit escape by accident. For now I'll
settle for writing into temporary files and saving the output, but I should change that.
On Tuesday I met Richard Ellsberry at the Brewers Art, and volunteered to help him
host the marylandarts.net site on a little shitbox server in the basement that I set up
to play around with Red Hat Fedora. I finally get around to installing the program
in the directory to realize that I don't have MySQL installed. Get MySQL all installed
to find out that I don't have PHP. Gave up to go take a shower.
Sadly, this is typical of my system installs. Eventually everything falls into place.
This whole budget thing is really getting me down. I have a section of the
spreadsheet dedicated to non-bill items; general stuff like gas, groceries, snack
machine purchases and the like. So far this month I've managed to spend an average
of $16.28 per day. Now I'm including stuff like new light bulbs, a quart of milk and
a tank of gas, but I've only budgeted for an average of $10 per day and last month that
seemed pretty damned reasonable.
I wish my friends weren't so social. I have to start inviting people over to share
some of the Costco food in my freezer.
