The Washington Post reports that Nextel is trying to give their 800 MHz frequency allocations to emergency services in exchange for permission by the FCC to garner new allocations in the 2.4 GHz range. The move would allow Nextel to use frequencies that are more practical to mobile telephone voice and data services, and free up a large portion of spectrum near ranges already used by public service trunking systems. Lacking the details, I believe this would be a good move on the part of both groups. Feedback from the FCC is still pending. Thanks to SmartBrief's Politech for the lead.
