national ID card

It's virtually unknown to most American citizens, but with the passing of the counterterrorism package at the end of October, U.S. law now contains wording added by Sen. Christopher S. Bond to establish a National ID Card system for foriegners. This law allows Attorney General John Ashcroft to decide which form this ID card will take. "New law contains ID-card proposal", an article by Dave Boyer in the Washington Times contains more information on the subject.

Meanwhile people like Renaud Olgiati and others from countries like France who have had longstanding government-issued ID card laws for some time, can't understand why Americans are so married to their personal privacy considering the conveniences that such a card provides. " I dont have any obligation to carry my ID card", he says in a post to the Computer Privacy Digest V19 #012, "but I choose to carry it, as it saves me from being held by the police, without any charge, . . . it allows me to travel freely thoughout the European Community without having a passport."
