Credit card companies get really really really friendly when you go to close out your account, especially if you're like me and tend towards impulsive hardware purchases in the thousands of dollars once a year or so and keep a nice running balance most of the year. I actually got transferred up to a person who's job it is to lowball offers in order to keep customers. The conversation went something like this:

"I see you've been with us for quite some time."

"Yes, since 1999."

"Can you tell me, why did you choose to close this account, Mr. Carlson?"

"Well, 2 months ago I called and asked if you could give me either a lower rate or a 0% for six months and customer service said there was no way they could do that. So I found someone who could and I no longer need this card."

"Can we offer you a 0% to transfer it back?"

"No, not really interested."

"How about a 6.99% fixed rate for new purchases?"

"No, I'm done with you."

"Is there anything we could do to keep you as a customer?"

"You could have been nicer to me two months ago."

Anyone traveling by car this weekend be aware that the Maryland State Police has launched a major campaign against speeders, aggressive drivers and DUI/DWI going from tomorrow until Tuesday. Many officers, state and local alike are being funded on federal dollars for their overtime (although the ticket revenue alone should cover most of it). Please drive carefully and within the laws.
