New Orleans, LA Report from a former resident, Sara Sathya:
oooh some recommendations, eh?
well, i'm not sure what you're in the mood for, but i have my list of
favorite local places that i always recommend. unfortunately, friends tell
me that a lot of the great places we used to frequent have closed down,
but luckily they can't close down the parks!
*Cafe Siam- eat upstairs at the Dragon's Den. thai food, sometimes live
music. on esplanade at a block off decatur (toward the river).
*You must go to Audubon Park!!! take the street car up st. charles (a long
nice, ride) until you get to the park- you'll know it cuz it will be just
past tulane university. there are amazing live oak trees and spanish moss,
and stuff.
La Fee Verte- in pirate's alley, by conti st. the alley is right behind
Jackson square between royal and chartres streets. this is a good small
cafe- *wireless access too. good wine.
Barristers Gallery and Zeitgiest Theatre- this is *such a cool
gallery-wierd shit from all over the world, and local artists too- also
movies at night. 1724 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.
*The Whirling Dervish- 1100 block of Decatur. *Cafe Brazil on frenchman
*Flora's on royal st. in the marigny (though most of the people who
usually sip coffee here will be at BM)
*The ARK- on Marigny and decatur in the marigny (this is a cool warehouse
space, from time to time circus shows, bands and fire jams or the like go
on here)
*if you're into bellydance but this is going on this weekend
http://devyani.net/shows.htm
*The Blue Nile-(bar/rest.) on Frenchman also has tribal bellydance on
fridays.
*CAC- Contemporary Arts Center has cool stuff and free internet (free but
slow). on Chartres north of Canal.
*The Pharmacy Museum is also pretty cool if, like me, you're into quirky
old pharmacutical conction methods...it's in the quarter on royal
somehwere near toulouse.
so many more recommendations...check out the Gambit too.
or... you coould always take an aligator swamp tour..hehehe
