August 18, 2003 Pre-burn Craft On at 3624 Buena Vista Ave, Baltimore, MD from 7pm - midnight.
My mother needs to hog the cellular data line to dial into her corporate VPN in a few minutes, and my Internet window doesn't open again until 21:00 tomorrow so I need to post this now.
This morning we went out to Wallops Island Flight Center to visit the NASA Visitor Center and check on the schedule of the Wednesday launch. The employee behind the counter called the flight information line and the public relations office to find that an Air Force rocket should blast off sometime between 6:00 and 9:00 on Wednesday. The window, however, extends not just three hours, but over the span of five days. So if we drive out to Main Street and sit from 6 to 9 in the morning, the rocket might not launch at all.
Boredom is a small risk to take, I think, to see an actual launch from the island. I don't believe that I've ever actually seen one in person, and probably neither has Alex.
After that my father and I rode our bikes up to the beach and Alex made five new friends building sand castles. I slept a lot on the sand until it was time to head home. We saw a bunch of herons, some sika deer and a bobwhite.
It was a bit overcast and we collectively forgot to put suntan lotion on Alex so she's a little burned. Not too badly, just enough to make the blankets a bit irritating. We won't forget tomorrow, for sure.
