August 8, 2003 Lloydfest this weekend.
Had a small get-together at the Wharf Rat, which is a pretty cool bar. I should go there more often. Then as soon as their happy hour was over it was up Broadway to Harford Road and to the new old faithful, Racers Cafe.
Pretty fun night. Too bad Suz isn't around, but I know she's busy getting important stuff taken care of.
At some point during today's blog reading, I stumbled across a comment who's cadence got stuck in my mind, but not the point of the sentence. It's either something like:
1. You'd probably hate the world made by any candidate 100% like you.
or
2. Any candidate you like 100% is unelectable.
Now, after writing them down I begin to immediately gravitate towards it having been the second one. But the first does bear some consideration. I don't know what to think about Howard Dean yet, and I won't commit to any direct advocacy for him because I haven't figured out if he matches my views closely enough for my comfort. I'm already convinced that he's by far the most electable democrat, but that's another issue.
But it let me to think, what would the world be like if a left-wing civil libertarian like myself got the perfect candidate. I think if you put a guy like me in absolute power for a while you'd see chance outlawed in favor of massive socialistic insurance, every nimrod with a birth certificate and 18 years carrying a high-powered pistol, and have a sweeping ignorant disregard for any portion of the country that wasn't a major metropolitan area suburb.
Now that's scary.
At least the punditry of Howard Dean's campaign office inspires me a little more than I can inspire myself.
He has, of course, the ultimate qualification in that he is Not George W. Bush.
