Dossiers, exploding candles, forfiture, hemp cars and venture capital

I haven't posted anything in over a week, so here's a quick writeup about interesting articles I've culled from my inbox today.

Another supurb article by Lauren Weinstein entitled A Day in the Life from his Reality Reset column arrived today. It helps to see just how much of ourselves we'll be giving up every days when you read it on the print of a personal dossier.

From the Virus Hoax Busters mailing list, a recurrent warning about exploding gel candles is actually based on truth, although peppered with exaggerations.

The Forfeiture Endangers American Rights organization mailing list highlights Michael J. Langer's, "Can Anyone Stop Big Brother? New York's Drunk Driving Laws Do Not Pass the Constitutional Test" in the Hofstra Law Review. This details the legality of forfiture of automobiles for alleged drunk driving.

Amazing but true, "The Hemp Car," a 1983 Mercedes Benz powered by pure hemp oil is making a U.S. hemp oil tour to advocate the use of oil is as a renewable resource and promote legalization of large scale cannibis growing. On a similar note, if you believe that drug-sniffing dogs should not be used in public schools, you should visit vote.com and make your opinion heard.

Ellen Wiggins, Executive Director, UMBC Research Park Corporation, authors an ongoing column called "Technocation" in the Daily Record's "Techlink" section. This week, Ellen looks at the latest data from the National Venture Capital Association and how Maryland is faring in the face of a nationwide decline in funding for startup companies. Wiggins sought out the expert advice of Dan Roche, the new Venable Entrepreneur in Residence at the UMBC Technology Center, for emerging companies looking to survive in these tougher times.
