EMC

Tips from guru Dale Ghent:

  • Watch out for Veritas DMP (a component of VXVM). It should be disabled.
  • EMC Powerpath rocks. It's their IO multiplexer/redundancy driver.
  • Dont be suprised if a EMC repairman shows up on your doorstepp one day (or night). The EMCs phone home when there's a problem.
  • The thing is managed from a built-in win98 laptop.
  • Sun will always tell you that Sun Cluster wont work with EMCs. This, of course, is bullshit.
  • Yes, those "Bad Magic Number or Label" error messages are okay. The EMCs use a fake disk device called a "gatekeeper". These are used for management of the EMC over the fibre/scsi links.
  • SRDM Software (for managment)is pretty cool. and expensive.
  • Be prepared to have 208V power feeds with Russel-Stoll connectors installed to power the things. Not your typical hook-up.
  • Disused EMCs make great MP3 archives.
  • Yes, the EMC should work with the Sun SOCAL card. And the Sun FCP fc card. It really likes the JNI cards. EMC will sell you the JNI cards for $10k each.
