Letter to Nancy Pelosi, November 20, 2002 Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi
2457 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
November 20, 2002
Dear Rep. Pelosi:
Congratulations on your election to minority leader of the U.S. House of
Representatives.
In the fight against terrorism, many in Congress have raced to grant
sweeping new authority to law enforcement and intelligence services
without taking the time to include safeguards against abuse by unethical
individuals within those organizations. With their new "mandate", the Bush administration may try to enact even more policies which threaten fundamental civil liberties and limit the freedom of all Americans.
I believe that many of the recent legislation from Congress has gone too
far in the direction of government surveillance and unwarranted
supervision and invasion into the lives of innocent citizens. This is a
process which will be difficult to correct if not addressed quickly.
As a citizen, the last thing I want is to have any of my liberties
traded for simple security. The United States is what it is today
because its citizens are able to take risks and speak out without
fear of the omnipresent eye of an overbearing government.
The Congress needs do all it can to ensure future generations the right
to their privacy and constitutional freedoms, and I hope they will do so under your leadership.
Thank you for your time and I wish you the best of luck in the future.
Sincerely,
Rob Carlson
