December 20, 2002 Winter Solstice Burn begins at Deeply Rooted.
Scott N3FJP invites local amateurs to join the Friday night net
again. If you are available tonight at 19:00 EST,
please join us on 147.525 MHz simplex for a completely informal chat. Even if you
only have a minute to stop in and say hello, please do so!
00. I sleep. Maryland passes by.
00. I sleep. Driving through Pennsylvania. Suz takes over.
00. I sleep. Pennsylvania continues.
00. I sleep. We enter Ohio.
00. I've taken over driving from Suz, and we're driving through Akron, OH.
00. Random driving thoughts. The only vehicle I see doing stupid things (like forgetting he's a truck and passing me on the left) is a rented Penske truck. I'm amazed at the professionalism and courtesy of long-haul truckers.
00. Driving continues. Ohio. 36 degrees.
00. For the safety of my passengers, we finally pull over at a rest stop, and Leah takes over for the drive through Michigan to Chicago, IL.
00. I sleep. Michigan passes by.
00 EST: I sleep. We enter Illinois.
00 CST: I wake up to find out that everyone has been having bizzare dreams too.
00. We're in Chicago, IL on Belmont Avenue for breakfast. Magorn, however, is in Maryland. Nymph doesn't answer her phone. 36 degrees.
00. We find that Zoom Kitchen on Belmont was closed so we go back up the street to Clarke's. The waitress was completely stressed but the food was great and the bill for all 5 of us came to $41.86. Then we browsed The Alley.
00. We finally left Chicago, IL on I-90 West with Steve driving.
00. It's snowing a little heavier now. 27 degrees. Steve gets tired. Still 99 miles to Wausau, WI.
00. 15th hour of the journey. Alex got cranky, and Leah isn't helping. After a tear-filled game of Uno, it's time for everybody to nap. 27 degrees. I ask Steve if I can drive and we switch off after a brief snowball fight at a rest stop.
00. Driving. Steve reads The Republic out loud from the back seat, which is really cool. Leah vocalizes her belief that that Socratic method is fundamentally flawed which hinders any further progress of the narritive. We get to page 18.
00. Shopping. Got some last-minute winter gear at Dunham's Sports in Wausau, and groceries at the Rib Mountian, WI IGA store. Start driving up.
00. Driving.
00. Got gas in Athens, WI. Arrived at Deeply Rooted. It's 24 degrees outside and doesnt feel like it.
00. We help BobbyG set up his structure outside while the kids are playing Pokemon cards on the loft.
00. Alex and kids get another hour before bedtime. Suz cooked some beans and rice. Alex plays with Willow in a pillowfight and refuses any substance because its too much fun playing.
00. I realize that we take certain things for granted. The feeling of a warm porcelean toilet seat is a good example. Alex is still up, and Bobby wants to do bonfire tonight but everybody too tired from the trip.
00. Sleep.
