October 30, 2002 Happy birthday to Robin Miller!
The dog got put to sleep today.
23:37: This thought is probably already completely obvious to everyone else, but I realized tonight that although having instructors who work full-time also teaching classes on the side does being "real world experience" to the classroom, they don't really bring the ability to communicate that knowledge down to someone who doesn't already have a few years life experience in the field. I can say this with a chuckle because right now I'm being taught by an intructor in a class where the syllabus matches my current job description and what I've been doing every workday day last two years.
The instructor has a subtle humor and good advice that anyone who's done any serious system analysis or programming can recognize and put to use right away. The problem is it's not really useful to most typical 22-year-old students the same way that Dilbert comics are not really funny to people who haven't spent 40 hours in a perpetually shrinking cubicle under a pointy-haired boss for the best years of their life. Nobody in the class seems to really comprehend the subtleties of what he's trying to say because they haven't been there to realize how close to home some of his admonitions will be one day.
