On March 9, 2004, Delegate Bromwell sent out an e-mail newsletter with a reprinting of letter to the editor which he had written to the local newspaper on the issue of the cost of prescription medications. Now first off, I think an e-mail newsletter from my state delegate is a great concept. Instead of some glossy sheet or some random letter I would put aside with the bills and then never read, I got a clearly written e-mail regarding the an issue I have been thinking about.
And this is very much a local issue. Its one thing to be a U.S. Congressman and pontificate on the issues of "seniors" not getting "affordable medicine," and its another to be a Maryland legislature seeing your friends and neighbors have scrimp and save just to stay healthy.
The letter was a bit sparse on details. Delegate Bromwell wrote that he had too much respect for the laws of the land to break them, but that a law prohibiting states from getting cheaper drugs for their citizens from other countries if need by was "incomprehensible" and "indefensible." I don't disagree, but I wasn't sure what he was actually doing. So two days later when I had a chance to carefully read his statement that evening, I fired off a quick message:
This is a very eloquent statement, but it is a statement of multiple
problems without a solution. Since you can't support SB 167, and you
find the current situation indefensible, what direction do you intend
to take in solving this problem?
The next afternoon there was a message in my mailbox detailing his drive to get assigned to the Health and Government Operations Committee (which he's been on since 2002), sponsorship of the Short-term Prescription Drug Subsidy Plan and attempts to regulate Pharmacy Benefit Managers. He also directed me to his web site for more information. These are all local and real actions that he's taken, and I was happy that he could take the time out of his busy schedule to give me all the details.
I'm very happy to have Delegate Bromwell as my delegate to the Maryland State Legislature.
