Wye Oak was a 460 year old White Oak standing 104 feet tall, 32 feet around at the base and weighing an estimated 200 tons. It was located in Wye Mills, MD in Talbot County, and as the most majestic example of the Maryland State Tree was designated a Maryland Historical Site and the destination of many Maryland school field trips.

A storm on June 6, 2002 with winds of over 60 miles per hour caused Wye Oak to fall over Maryland Route 662. On June 7, 2002, Maryland Governor Parris Glendening issued a statement mourning the loss of the majestic state symbol.
