moving The good:
- The awesome Judy Morris for being quite possibly the most diligent real estate agent ever.
- Resident sage Magorn for being the perpetual voice of reason in my life.
- Rob Banz for sending me a list of locksmiths from the yellow pages to my Blackberry.
- Tracy Soltesz for letting me hitch a ride with her back to South Plainfield, NJ.
- Charlie Brown's Steak House for taking our reservations for 5 over the phone even though
they usually don't do it for less than 8 people.
- My Pop-pop for driving me all the way to Hackensack, NJ to pick up a damn truck.
- Roy's Service Center in Hackensack, NJ for having patient and understanding staff who gave me an extra 86 miles on
my truck.
- Solari's Restaurant. I want to eat there just for the receipt.
- Honey for the bed, fantastic cookies and tons of popcorn for me and my friends.
- Keith Engle for coming out even though I couldn't make it back down in time.
- The ever-helpful Steve Killen and Rebecca Stephen for helping me unload the furniture from New Jersey.
- Fellow Burning Man widow Amy LaPerle for helping me move almost every box and furniture item from 2600 into the truck until midnight in spite
of her bad knee and back, and bringing bagels.
- Dale Ghent for patiently guarding the truck all evening and pitching in on the moving.
- Sara Sathya for pushing me to get everything done in time, and chipping in.
- The Little Honda Civic That Could, crammed to the brim with the boxes I didn't have the energy to put into the truck
on Saturday night.
- Fellow homeowner Dave Corun for coming out to save the day and unloading the truck with me in spite of a hangover and Wendy's burger wreaking havoc
in his intestinal track.
- Christy Thorndill for calling to offer her assistance after we were done.
- Fatboy Slim, Ernesto Rico, and Click and Clack for keeping me entertained throughout this process.
- Jacki Gutenkunst for picking me up from Towson after I drop off the truck and introducing me to the
Bel Loc diner on Loch Raven Boulevard.
- My Nokia 6160 for lasting through 36 hours of idle and 3 hours of frenzied phone calls all weekend long without a recharge.
- My Blackberry for letting me send directions to everybody online.
- National Bohemian Beer. Don't knock it.
- The city of Baltimore, MD for not getting one last swipe in at me before I left. Sayanora!
- 2600 North Calvert Street for being the roof over my head for the last 13 months.
- 2636 Wentworth Road for being the Coolest. House. Ever.
The bad:
- Burning Man for keeping Suz away from me.
- UHaul's scheduling office for not being able to find me a truck within 30 miles after I made
my reservation a week and a half in advance, not having found a truck until 17:30 on the day of my
reservation, and finally 16 hours later sending me an hour north of South Plainfield
to pick up something 3 feet shorter than what I requested.
- Thinking I put unleaded regular into a diesel engine, freaking out, calling the help line, which
finally told me that it wasn't a diesel engine at all, but was still going to send a mechanic out.
- Being perpetually 21 hours behind schedule all weekend long.
- UHaul truck number DC3047C, for constantly overheating above 30 miles and hour even with an empty load, having
a broken alternator gauge and fuel guage (perpetually three quarters full), driving
me completely insane and crushing my kneecap in the door while I went to get the
rental information after unpacking the truck.
- Overpacking Dell boxes so they're impossible to lift.
- Cold drizzle.
- Biodegradable packing peanuts because they don't so much
biodegrade as melt in the rain into sticky blobs that stick to every rubber surface
like shoes and plastic boxes. And they did.
- UHaul again. I called All Tune and Lube on Loch Raven Boulevard to follow up and she said that they charged me $86.40 for an extra two days of rental and didn't know why. I called the regional office and she didn't know why either so she called them back. We finally realized that it was my early reservation (I asked for the truck on Friday and didn't get one until Saturday morning) and the fact that they checked the truck back in on Tuesday at 10:00 even though it was sitting in their lot since Labor Day at 11:00. Credit of $86.40 to my VISA card was serviced after an annoyingly long phone call.
- All Tune and Lube for not being clueful enough to back-date the checkin to the day that their office was closed.
