You're building the .debs there, too, it's just scripted (because of the odd distribution requirements). It's essentially an apt-get source --compile, which gets the source and the Debian patches for it, applies the patches, and makes the .deb.

The mailing list is also very helpful, but merciless if your answer can be found in the documentation. The real problem with his online docs is that they aren't organized the way we're expecting them to be (like, in a HOWTO-type format). They contain all the information you need, but you have to read a few pages to get it, sometimes ones you might not expect.
