Update December 29, 2002: We're back in service on a shared cable modem line.

Update December 30, 2002: Back down again. The wireless link is better than nothing, but not by much.

I turned off my phone line on December 19, 2002 and lost my DSL connection as a result.

Eric from Speakeasy Support wrote in response to my helpdesk ticket, "Because your DSL is a line shared service, removing the ILEC line removes your DSL service, because the Phone company disconnects the line at the CO. If you have a RADSL installed anytime in the last year or so, your line is shared on your phone line. If you intend to have DSL with no active phone, you will need to have a SDSL or and IDSL installed, as those both have dedicated phone lines independent of your voice service. You will need to cancel this DSL, and re-order when your phone is hooked up."

I need to find a new home for kindbud.vees.net for a little while, and in the meantime we'll have to provision basic telephone service (again) and reinstall the DSL line. I have no idea when this will all happen since I need to have a new phone line provisioned again and then get the DSL reprovisioned. Last time it took a few weeks. I'll call Verizon on Thursday and find out what needs to happen. Sorry to all of you who can't play on IRC or surf the web without it.

Update December 26, 2002: Speakeasy says they'll refund the install fee if I order again within 90 days, as part of their moving package. Phone service re-ordered. Verizon milks me for another $48. Installation date is January 2, 2002.

Update: Found a home for the machine for a week.

Update December 27, 2002: Got hit with a $300 Disconnection Fee. Called up tech support and Nicole told me that the charge would be waived when I started the service again within 90 days, and I could waive the install fee since I had all my own equipment. Whee! I will have to pay the $255.82 balance before I sign up again, since it's due on January 3, 2002.

Update: Spent 20 minutes on the phone with Verizon trying to paying the outstanding bill by credit card before they could start the new service. Apparently their credit card systems were down today, so I have to call back around 17:30 to finish the transaction.

Update: Another call to Verizon. Credit card system is still down. The operator is very apologetic, but unfortunately that doesn't get me a new install date.

Update: It finally works. The conversation with the install lady went something like this:

"Are you sure you want the economy rate package?"

"Yes."

"You know that's only good for people who make maybe 1 or 2 calls a day."

"I'm making zero."

"Oh." She proceeds to ask me 8 more questions about frills and special features. Finally I say:

"Okay, let me make this easy for you. I am on the phone right now because you are the ILEC. I would like you to put two copper wires from your CO to my house. Then tell Covad where to find the pair on your end so they can tie it into the DSLAM. End of story. Can we finish quickly?"

Silence.

"Yes, I guess so. Mr. Carlson, I'll be sending you two complimentary phone cards."

It makes me want to scream.

Old news:

The server kindbud.vees.net lost power and network connectivity at 2:30 on Saturday, August 3, 2002. It was rebooted at 18:00 on Monday, August 5, 2002 with no problems. Sorry for any inconvenience.
